04/14/12 – University of South Florida Green and Gold Bowl Spring Game

The first half of Saturday being spent in the Orlando area photographing the University of Central Florida’s annual spring game for the first time, Envision Sports Media made a quick return trip west on I-4 and arrived in Tampa just in time for the start of the University of South Florida’s Green and Gold Bowl Game, the first of two “official” spring scrimmages held by the Bulls this year.

A spirited contest played on the soccer field at Corbett Stadium, fans enjoyed comfortable temperatures and the golden colors of a Southwest Florida setting sun as Skip Holtz’s 2012 quarterback corps , headed up by fifth-year senior B.J. Daniels (18-of-24 passing with two touchdowns), put up an impressive 550 yards passing, ten touchdowns and completed passes to 19 different players.

Wednesday’s trip to the University of Central Florida not only provided Envision Sports Media with the opportunity to officially work with the University of Florida’s softball program for the first time, but also revealed that the Knights would just three days later be holding their annual spring football game. Looking for an opportunity to branch out and take on a new challenge, Envision Sports Media requested and received permission to photograph the scrimmage the following afternoon, and, thanks to Brian Ormiston of the UCF Athletic Communications Department, was along the sidelines Saturday afternoon to capture all the action of one of the most prestigious programs in Conference USA.

Here, Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media provides a selection of images from Saturday’s spring game, which put on display the throwing ability of quarterback Blake Bortles (27-of-45 passing for 239 yards and a touchdown) and a one-two punch at running back with Storm Johnson and Latavius Murray that combined for 15 carries, 100 yards rushing and a touchdown in the game. An incredibly special treat for Envision Sports Media Wednesday evening, as, after two years of voluntary coverage of the University of Florida’s softball team, ESM finally yielded the opportunity to serve in official capacity with the program as the #3-ranked Gators traveled to Orlando for an in-state showdown against a feisty University of Central Florida squad.

Fueled by the incredible change up of freshman pitching phenom, Mackenzie Audas, the Knights shut down Florida’s hitters, and, on the strength of a two-run first inning, ended up upsetting the Gators 2-0 for the first time in program history.

What follows is a sampling of images taken by Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media during Wednesday’s showdown between the Gators and Knights. 02/21/12 – State College of Florida Manatees Baseball

Envision Sports Media attended its first official baseball game at State College of Florida Wednesday night, this as the Manatees hosted Indian River State College at Robert C. Wynn Field in Bradenton, Florida.

Thanks to a RBI single by freshman Dalton Busby in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied at 7-7, SCF earned its 11th victory of the year, and moves to 6-2-1 on the year at home, having defeated Indian River 8-7.

The 2012 NCAA baseball season officially kicked off for Envision Sports Media this past Sunday as Michigan State University contracted Jason Roberts to photograph its match up Sunday morning against the University of Louisville at the Walter Fuller Baseball Complex in Clearwater, Florida.

The closeout to the Spartans’ participation in the annual three-day Big East / Big Ten Challenge Tournament, wind and sporadic downpours put a damper on Sunday’s contest, but allowed for plenty of offense, with the Cardinals eventually edging out Michigan State in a 7-6 slugfest.

After spending the good majority of Saturday floating around St. Petersburg Harbor in a Zodiac photographing the USF Sailing Intersectional, Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media took a quick jaunt over the Howard Franklin to Hillsborough County and the University of South Florida’s main campus where he was scheduled to photograph the Bulls women’s basketball team, in action that night against the visiting Pittsburgh Panthers.

A physical contest that saw its fair share of flaired tempers, Saturday’s match up between the two Big East programs saw the University of South Florida take advantage of some 20 turnovers by Pittsburgh en route to a 62-50 win over the Panthers.

An odd, yet intriguing new adventure awaited Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media Saturday morning, this after being asked to photograph the University of South Florida’s sailing squadron as it hosted the likes of Stanford University, University of Washington, College of Charleston, Yale University, the Naval Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, University of Miami, and Eckerd College at the 2012 USF Sailing Intersectional.

A day plagued early on by fog and a noticeable lack of sea breeze, the regatta was able to get in a number of races by 3:00 p.m., this as skies partially cleared and winds – albeit soft – raised promise for full sails and competitive racing.

One of the surprise stories of this past fall’s collegiate golf season was the emergence of the Baylor University women’s golf squad, who, heading into the this past weekend’s UCF Challenge, was ranked No. 22 in the country.

Baylor pushed a field of 18 hard, tying both Tulane and Auburn for first heading into the tournament’s final round on Tuesday.

Ultimately, the Bears finished second amongst its competitors with a combined team score of 865.

Meanwhile, both Chelsea Cothran and teammate Hayley Davis tied for fourth in the UCF Challenge individual standings, one stroke behind the tandem of Gemma Dryburgh and Ashley McKenney of the Green Wave.

Jason Roberts of Envision Sports Media was on site at RedTail Golf and Country Club for both the second and final rounds of the UCF Challenge, and here provides a broad sample of images captured of the Baylor Bears women’s golf team on Monday and Tuesday. 02/10/12 – Ohio State University Buckeyes Softball

As the National Training Center in Claremont, Florida held its annual softball invitational to kickoff the 2012 collegiate season, Jason Roberts and Jodie Snyder of Envision Sports Media were on hand Friday afternoon to photograph Ohio State University as it took on Florida Atlantic University in the second of two games played by the Buckeyes on opening day of the tournament.

A photographer can never fully prepare for every possible challenge he /she might meet while on assignment; Friday’s game was certainly a reminder of that, as Envision Sports Media learned times for matchups contracted by OSU had apparently been changed and that tournament organizers had not been properly informed of ESM’s arrival.

Regardless, Jason and Jodie may the best of a tough situation, with the former here providing a sampling of shots obtained as the Buckeyes built on a four-run fifth inning in order to overcome the Owls, 9-5.
