2010 Dunedin Blue Jays vs Bradenton Marauders Doubleheader – Games 2 & 3

maraudersjays__21 The Marauders were defeated by the Jays in the first game of a double header Saturday evening. The game featured a pitching match up of  Bradenton’s Tim Alderson and Dunedin’s Chuck Huggins. Huggins delivered a solid performance over five innings of the seven inning contest, giving up four hits (including a home run to ) and striking out four. Alderson was chased out of the game early once again, this time allowing seven runs (six earned) in four innings of work. Dunedin’s Mark Sobolewski led both teams in offensive production, going three for four with two home runs and accounting for six RBIs. Bradenton’s Jordan Newton hit his first home run of the season but it was not enough for the struggling Marauders who fell to the Jays by a final score of 10 to 5.

The second game of the double header featured Toronto’s 2009 first round pick, Chad Jenkins facing off against Bradenton’s Brian Leach. Dunedin got out to an early, and despite late inning heroics from Quincy Latimore and Jose De Los Santos, the Marauders dropped the second game by a final score of 4 to 3.  Leach pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs and was charged with the loss. Jay’s reliever Ross Buckwalter picked up his first win of the year, pitching two scoreless innings while striking out four. Matthew Daly picked up his 22 save of the year, trailing only Bradenton’s Noah Krol for the most saves this season.

2010 FSL Baseball – Clearwater Threshers & Bradenton Marauders (07-17-10)

07172010-fsl-threshers-marauders-38 Three runs  by the Clearwater Threshers in the first two innings of Saturday evening’s matchup against the Bradenton Marauders, along with another scored in the top of the seventh, provided just enough of a scoring buffer for the Threshers to avoid a third-straight defeat at McKechnie Field as a four-game road stand against the Marauders came to a close with a 4-3 win.  Bradenton saw yet another late game rally (the previous night saw the Maruders’ Quincy Latimore strike a two-run walk-off homer in the team’s last at-bat to give Bradenton a narrow 4-3 victory) in the bottom of the ninth Saturday – one in which short stop Adam Davis and catcher Jordan Newton reached home plate on a pair of fielding and throwing errors by Clearwater – but fell short of tying the game with a runner on third as rehabbing designated hitter Brian Friday struck out swinging for the contest’s final out.  Center fielder for the Threshers Anthony Gose had an impressive outing in the win, going two-of-four hitting and accounting for two runs, while third baseman Tim Kennelly and designated hitter Jim Murphy, who hit a two run homer in the second, each reached home plate once. Starting pitcher for Clearwater Ed Garcia went four innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five before yielding the ball to Tyler Cloyd, who earned his fourth win of the year for the Threshers after giving up two hits and one run through two innings work.  Nathan Baker, seeing his first start on the mound for the Marauders Saturday, overcame a tough start in which he gave up three runs early, but finished six innings pitching having struck out five, while giving up a total of five hits.  Following his departure at the end of the sixth, support for Baker came in the form of relief pitching by Duke Welker and ended with closer Casey Erickson, who threw the final two innings but also gave up the winning run in the top of the seventh on a single by Clearwater first baseman Darin Ruf that scored Gose from second.  Newton finished Saturday’s game the Marauders’ top producer offensively, grabbing two hits and scoring twice in four trips to the plate, while Davis and short stop Adenson Churio accounted for a pair of RBIs on the night.  Despite the loss, Bradenton still took three of the four games played at home against the Threshers and look to continue their winning ways Sunday afternoon with a road trip of its own against the first place North Division Tampa Yankees.  Clearwater, meanwhile, returns to Bright House Field where it will play a four-game set against the visiting St. Lucie Mets.

2010 FSL Baseball – Clearwater Threshers & Bradenton Marauders (07-16-10)

07162010-fsl-threshers-marauders-29 An early cloudburst that sent fans at McKechnie Field scurrying for cover with the opening pitch of Friday night’s game between the Clearwater Threshers and Bradenton Marauders wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of the home team, with the Marauders overcoming a three-run effort by the Threshers in the top of the fourth inning to win 4-3, thanks to a walk-off home run struck by left fielder Quincy Lattimore in the bottom of the ninth.  Bradenton went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third as center fielder Robbie Grossman homered off Threshers’ starter on the mound Austin Hyatt (five innings pitched, four hits and one run surrendered, six strikeouts), but quickly squandered that lead during Clearwater’s next at-bat, with designated hitter Jim Murphy smacking a two-run homer to left, then third baseman Korby Mintken stealing home on a wild pitch by Bradenton starting pitcher Aaron Pribanic.  Pribanic tightened up in innings five and six, allowing just one runner on base through his final two innings of work, and finished having surrendered a total of six hits and three runs while striking out five before being relieved by Thomas Boleska.  In the meantime, Juan Sandoval, in to take over for Hyatt in the bottom of the sixth for Clearwater, gave up a run to James Skelton on a single by Jose De Los Santos to bring Bradenton within a run of tying the game and was quickly replaced by Jacob Diekman. But it was Threshers’ closer Christopher Kissock (0.1 innings pitched, one hit, two runs, one walk, one strike out) who, facing off against Latimore with Brian Friday on second late in the ninth, gave up a walk-off home run that sealed the game for Bradenton and earned Kissock his third loss and fourth blown-save for the year.  Tyler Cox of Bradenton, meanwhile, improved to 5-1 for the season after walking one and striking out one in the top of the ninth, while Latimore finished the Marauders’ top producer at the plate, going two-of-five and earning two RBIs and a run of his own for the evening.  Bradenton, having won three-straight in its home-stand against Clearwater, will look to close out the series with a sweep of the Threshers on Saturday evening.

2010 FSL Baseball – Charlotte Stone Crabs & Bradenton Marauders (07-07-10)

070710-fsl-stone-crabs-marauders-50 The Bradenton Marauders used a four-run sixth and seventh inning Wednesday night to boost itself to a 6-4 victory over visiting FSL South rivals, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, and in doing so, took the first of a three-game home series against Charlotte being played at McKechnie Field this week. A closely-contested game that remained tied at 2-2 coming out of the fourth inning, Bradenton suddenly took control of Wednesday’s contest  just past its mid-way point, taking advantage of the hitting of center fielder Austin McClune, first baseman Erik Huber, right fielder Robbie Grossman and third baseman Adam Davis to extend the Marauders’ lead to 6-3 following the end of the seventh.  Charlotte, who earned a run off designated hitter Stephen Vogt in the top of the seventh, closed the gap to within two runs in the eighth after second baseman Anthony Scelfo reached home on a ground out to third by left fielder Christopher Murrill, but could not overcome the pitching of Bradenton closer Noah Krol, who earned his 20th save on the year after a 1.1 inning outing with one hit surrendered.  Stone Crabs starter on the mound, Shane Dyer, dropped to 4-5 for the season after throwing 5.2 innings and surrendering eight hits and four runs (four strike outs), but it was reliever Neil Schenk who accounted for the Marauders final two runs on the night, allowing Bradenton to pick up its third-consecutive victory since losing to Charlotte on the road 6-1 back on July 3. Six separate Bradenton batters posted an RBI in the win Wednesday, with Davis and catcher Jordan Newton combining for a team best four-of-seven from the plate.  Murrill, meanwhile, topped all Stone Crabs hitters for the game, going two-of-three for a double, one RBI and one run, while third baseman Greg Sexton finished three-for-five and an RBI  on the evening. Matt McSwain (2.2 innings pitched, six hits, two runs, one walk) also picked up his first win with the Marauders as a result of Wednesday’s victory.  The Marauders will try to build on that momentum once more  in a second matchup against the Stone Crabs Thursday, and look to finish better than the 1-2 record posted the last time the two teams met in Charlotte at the start of month.

stlucbrad2_34 The St. Lucie Mets and Bradenton Marauders finally had to opportunity to complete their double header on Tuesday evening. Bradenton’s Nathan Adcock battled Mets Brad Holt on the mound. St. Lucie scored in the first inning after lead off man Wilfredo Tolivar reached base on a throwing error by Bradenton’s newest Marauder, Adam Davis. Tolivar reached second after a passed ball and finally scored after a single by Michael Moras.  Bradenton struck back in the bottom of the inning as Greg Picart and Robbie Grossman both hit safely to reach base. Thing took a turn for the worse for the Marauders who suffered a huge loss as Tony Sanchez was hit in the head for the second time this season. Sanchez was helped off the field and did not return. Eric Fryer was called in as his substitution. Calvin Anderson’s single scored Grossman and Picart. Raul Reyes evened the game in the next half inning for St. Lucie with a solo home run, his third of the season. Bradenton was quick to respond, tacking on an additional two runs in the bottom of the second. Austin McClune led the inning off with a single, stole second then reached third on a sacrifice bunt from Adenson Churio. Picart sent a line drive to left which scored McClune. Robbie Grossman drew a walk and was driven home on a single by Eric Fryer. Bradenton added one more run in the third after Quincy Latimore led off the inning with a double, his seventh on the year. Latimore advanced to third after a single by Calvin Anderson, then scored after a wild pitch by Brad Holt. Holt was relieved afetr the fourth inning by Marcos Tabata after surrendering eight hits and allowing four earned runs. Adcock, who was awarded the win, pitched five and a third solid inning for the Marauders, giving up five hits and one earned run. Ramon Aguaro picked up the save for the Marauders pitching one and two thirds innings, striking out two and allowing only one hit. The Marauders defeated the Mets by a score of 5-2 in game one of the double header.

Game two saw Casey Erickson face off against St. Lucie’s Robert Carson. The game remained scoreless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Erickson was replaced by Melkin Laureano after pitching three shutout innings, striking out one and allowing one hit. Laureano was solid in the fourth inning giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one. The Marauders finally put up numbers on the score board in the fourth inning to end the scoring drought. Robbie Grossman led off with a double, his 13th this year. Quincy Latimore followed up with another double, scoring Grossman. Latimore would eventually score after Austin McClune stroked a double to left. With a 2-0 lead, the Marauders sent Matt McSwain to the mound. McSwain gave up a double to Raul Reyes, who scored after fielders choice’s from Hector Pellot and Michael Moras. McSwain held the lead for Bradenton through the sixth inning. In two innings of work he only allowed one hit. The Marauders sent in closer, Noah Krol, to finish the game in the seventh. Joey August led off the inning with a walk. Then Krol gave up a two run home run to the dangerous Raul Reyes (who was incidentally promoted to AA Binghamton following this series). Krol was charged with the loss as the Marauders were unable to dig out of their 3-2 defecit in the bottom of the inning.

2010 St. Lucie Mets vs Bradenton Marauders Game 1

stlucbrad1_08 The St. Lucie Mets and the Bradenton Marauders were able to get in one of the two scheduled games of the double header in before the rain. The double header was scheduled as a make up of the April 18th game, also called due to weather. Bradenton’s Brian Leach (3-4) opposed Met’s right-hander Jeurys Familia (0-4). Tony Sanchez gave the Marauders an early lead with a solo homerun, his fourth of the year, in the first inning. The 1-0 lead held until the top of the sixth. With one out, Raul Reyes doubled to right field. Hector Pellot, the next batter, brought Reyes in with a single to center. Pellot scored on a fielders choice from Ryan Mollica to give St. Lucie a 2-1 lead. Michael Colla relieved Leach in the top of the seventh. Leach surrendered five hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out four. Colla pitched a perfect inning, inducing three straight outs. Bradenton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Adenson Churio, the lead off batter, reached first base on a fielding error by Jordany Valdespin. Greg Picart moved Churio to second with a sacrifice bunt. Churio advanced to third on a fielders choice from Robbie Grossman. A wild pitch by Familia allowed Churio to tie the game. Familia was replaced by Met’s reliever Rhiner Cruz. Double header games in the Florida State League are scheduled for seven innings, but the tie forced an extra eighth inning. Noah Krol entered the game for the Marauders, he walked one and struck out one with out allowing a run. Adam Davis led off the bottom of the eighth with a single for Bradenton. Eric Huber’s sacrifice bunt moved Davis to second. McClune hit the game winning walk-off single which scored Davis and the Marauders took the first game 3-2. Krol picked up the win for Bradenton and Cruz was charged with the loss. The second game, scheduled to begin a half hour later, never began due to weather conditions which forced a double header the next day.

2010 FSL Baseball – St. Lucie Mets & Bradenton Marauders

2010-fsl-mets-marauders-dh-6-22-52 The Bradenton Marauders split a double-header with the St. Lucie Mets Tuesday night at McKechnie Field, picking up a comfortable 5-2 win in the early contest, but falling 3-2 in a grinder of a second game that ultimately turned in favor of the away squad.

In the top half of the double-header, Bradenton saw all five of its runs scored in the first three innings, with shortstop Greg Picart, center fielder Robbie Grossman, right fielder Austin McClune, and left fielder Quincy Latimore all crossing home plate.  St Lucie shortstop Wilfredo Tovar and center Raul Reyes both scored a run in innings one and two (Reyes, thanks to a solo homerun to left in the second) to put the Mets on the board, but solid pitching from the combination of Nathan Adcock (5.1 innings, five hits, two runs, two walks, one strikeout) and closer Ramon Aguero (1.2 innings, one hit, two strikeouts) kept St. Lucie hitters at bay for the remainder of the contest.  Picart finished the top batter for Bradenton in the win, going two-for-four with one run and one RBI, while Grossman netted an impressive two runs on one hit and two at-bats.  Adcock, meanwhile, bumped his record to 7-2 on the year, while Aguero notched his first save.  St. Lucie starter on the mound, Bradley Holt, fell to 0-1 for 2010.

Game Two saw a different St. Lucie team take the diamond at McKechnie, however, with the Mets this time taking a much more defensive approach against the Marauders – and one that ultimately paid off with a hard fought win, 3-2.  The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, with opportunities for runners to be moved into scoring position few and far between.  Bradenton finally broke things open in the bottom of the fourth, thanks in no small part to a pair of back-to-back doubles struck by Grossman and Latimore to open the inning (Grossman scored on the latter) and a matching double to left from McClune that ended up plating Latimore.  Up 2-0, the Marauders suddenly appeared to have righted the ship and  looked prepared to walk away from the day having earned a second-straight victory.  St. Lucie had other plans, however, answering Bradenton in the top of the fifth as Reyes reached home on a ground out to first by catcher Michael Moras, and then posting a two-run seventh thanks to a homer hit to center field by third baseman Richard Lucas.  The Marauders, reeling somewhat from the sudden turn of events, hoped to tie things back up in the bottom of the ninth and send the game into extra innings, but could not earn any additional hits off Mets’ closer Jose Bierd, who picked up his sixth save with the win.   Starter on the mound for St. Lucie, Robert Carson, went 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out three and walking three, but it was reliever Elvin Ramirez that picked up his second win for 2010 with a 1.1 inning, one walk effort.  For Bradenton, starter Casey Erickson went three innings with one hit and one strikeout before relieved by Melkin Laureano, but it was Noah Krol that ultimately earned the loss, falling to 3-4 on the year.

A sad note to the evening:  starter at catcher for Bradenton, Tony Sanchez,  suffered what is believed to be a broken jaw after being hit in the head by a pitch for the second time this month in Game One.  We at Envision Sports Media wish Tony a speedy recovery.

2010 FSL Baseball – Jupiter Hammerheads & Bradenton Marauders

2010-fsl-hammerheads-marauders-6-18-52 Maruaders left fielder Quincy Latimore struck a two-run homer  in the bottom of the first inning of Friday night’s matchup against the Jupiter Hammerheads that, matched up with an earlier RBI in the at-bat by catcher Tony Sanchez, provided Bradenton with a 4-2 victory at home in front of a crowd of just under 1,000.  A spattering of rain just prior to the first pitch soon dissipated, and left Bradenton to an impressive offensive showing early on, with the Marauders – thanks to the hitting of Sanchez and Latimore – heading out of the first inning with a 3-0 lead.    Jupiter starting pitcher Bryan Evans would settle down starting in the second inning, allowing a total of six hits and three earned runs while striking out four through seven innings of work, but two runs scored by the Hammerheads in the  seventh (scores by first baseman Ben Lasater and center fielder Chris Dunn) still fell short of to getting the visiting team back into the game.  Bradenton too managed to extend its lead by an additional run in the bottom of the eighth, with shortstop Greg Picart reaching home after Pittsburgh Pirates’ first baseman, Steve Pearce (down on a rehab assignment after injuring his right ankle) struck a double into left field, leaving the score at 4-2, where it remained for the remainder of the contest.   Starting pitcher for Bradenton, Jeffrey Locke, was outstanding in the win over Jupiter, earning his sixth win of the year after throwing six innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits, no runs, while Noah Krol, the Marauders’ star closer, also came away with his 17th overall save for 2010.  The Hammerheads fall to 21-43 with the road loss, while Bradenton, at 36-29, move within 3.5 games of FSL South leaders, the Charlotte Stone Crabs.
