The 2010 Florida State League All Star game was held Saturday evening at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida. The game featured the brightest stars in the Florida State League representing their divisions – North and South. The Brevard County Manatees played host to the game for the second time in four years. Prior to the game, selected players of each squad each had ten swings to hit as many home runs possible. A second round featuring the top two performers – Charlotte Stone Crab’s Henry Wrigley and Bradenton Marauder’s Quincy Latimore – was supposed to determine the winner. After the second round with both players were still tied, a sudden death round was initiated. Latimore hit one home run in his five chances, but was bested by his South team mate, Wrigley, who hit two home runs while on his final out.
Tampa Yankees pitcher Adam Warren started the game for the North Squad, opposing South starter Palm Beach Cardinal’s Mark Diapoules. Quincy Latimore knocked the first pitch of the game into left field for a base hit. He would go on to score off a ground out from Henry Wrigley. After solid outings by Diapoules and Bradenton’s Jeffery Locke, the North team took the lead in the bottom of the third when Fort Myers’ Billy Bullock entered the game. Brett Jackson drove in Jack Rye and Travis d’Arnaud hit into a ground out, scoring Gustavo Nunez.
The 2-1 score held until the top of the fifth when Xavier Scruggs hit a home run off of Brevard’s Michael Fiers. The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the seventh. Matt Cline hit into a ground out which easily scored base runners Eric Komatsu and Jack Rye to give the North team a 4-2 lead. With one swing of the bat in the eighth inning, Josh Satin brought the game to a tie once again as he knocked a two run home run off Daytona’s Aaron Shafer. With no score in the ninth inning, it was announced that a tenth inning would be played, and if a run was not scored, the game would officially end in a tie. Determined to break the tie, the South’s lead off hitter, Latimore, reached base with a single. After stealing second, Latimore was driven in on a base hit to right field from Josh Satin. Charlotte’s Zachary Quate closed out the game with only eight pitches, striking out Matt Cline and Yan Gomes before enducing a ground ball from Cody Overbeck. With a final score of 5-4, the South team triumphed over the North Squad in ten innings. For his late game heroics, St. Lucie’s Josh Satin was awarded the the game’s Top Star award and MVP honors.
