2010 Florida State League All Star Game

fsl_80 The 2010 Florida State League All Star game was held Saturday evening at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida. The game featured the brightest stars in the Florida State League representing their divisions – North and South. The Brevard County Manatees played host to the game for the second time in four years. Prior to the game, selected players of each squad each had ten swings to hit as many home runs possible. A second round featuring the top two performers – Charlotte Stone Crab’s Henry Wrigley and Bradenton Marauder’s Quincy Latimore – was supposed to determine the winner. After the second round with both players were still tied, a sudden death round was initiated. Latimore hit one home run in his five chances, but was bested by his South team mate, Wrigley, who hit two home runs while on his final out.

Tampa Yankees pitcher Adam Warren started the game for the North Squad, opposing South starter Palm Beach Cardinal’s Mark Diapoules. Quincy Latimore knocked the first pitch of the game into left field for a base hit. He would go on to score off a ground out from Henry Wrigley. After solid outings by Diapoules and Bradenton’s Jeffery Locke, the North team took the lead in the bottom of the third when Fort Myers’ Billy Bullock entered the game. Brett Jackson drove in Jack Rye and Travis d’Arnaud hit into a ground out, scoring Gustavo Nunez.

The 2-1 score held until the top of the fifth when Xavier Scruggs hit a home run off of Brevard’s Michael Fiers. The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the seventh. Matt Cline hit into a ground out which easily scored base runners Eric Komatsu and Jack Rye to give the North team a 4-2 lead. With one swing of the bat in the eighth inning, Josh Satin brought the game to a tie once again as he knocked a two run home run off Daytona’s Aaron Shafer. With no score in the ninth inning, it was announced that a tenth inning would be played, and if a run was not scored, the game would officially end in a tie. Determined to break the tie, the South’s lead off hitter, Latimore, reached base with a single. After stealing second, Latimore was driven in on a base hit to right field from Josh Satin. Charlotte’s Zachary Quate closed out the game with only eight pitches, striking out Matt Cline and Yan Gomes before enducing a ground ball from Cody Overbeck. With a final score of 5-4, the South team triumphed over the North Squad in ten innings. For his late game heroics,  St. Lucie’s Josh Satin was awarded the the game’s Top Star award and MVP honors.

2010 Fort Myers Miracle vs Bradenton Marauders Game 1

ftmyrsbrton1_41 Having already squared off eight times, Fort Myers returned to McKechnie Field to face the familiar Bradenton Marauders. The Miracle sent 19 year old Adrian Salcedo (0-1) to the mound to oppose Bradenton’s Brian Leach (2-1). Bradenton struck first as Brock Holt scored a run in the first inning off of a Tony Sanchez sacrifice fly. This would be the only lead Bradenton would hold the entire game, and it did not last long. In the following inning Leach gave up back to back singles to Daniel Rohlfing and Jair Fernandez. Nicholas Romero drove in both runners with a single to take the lead, 2 to 1. In the third, Brian Dozier added another run for the Miracle off an Evan Bigley sacrifice. Bradenton tried to keep it close, adding another run to tie the game when Robbie Grossman’s single to right field brought Brock Holt home. Fort Myers answered right back in the fourth inning. After a walk by Nicholas Romero, Joe Benson hit a two run home run to give the Miracle a 4 to 2 lead. In the sixth inning, Michael Felix replaced Brian Leach for the Marauders. Joe Benson hit another two run home run, brining Fort Myers lead to 6- 2. In the bottom of the inning, the Miracle replaced Salcedo with left-hander, Tony Davis. The Miracle broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh. Evan Bigley led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Nathan Hanson. A wild pitch from Felix advanced the runners to second and third. With two outs, Nicholas Romero hit a ground rule double which scored Bigley and Hanson. The Marauders sent Tyler Cox to relieve Felix. Joe Benson collected his third hit of the inning, knocking a single past shortstop Brock Holt. Cox walked the next batter, Brian Dozier to load the bases. Chris Parmalee hit his first grand slam of the season to give the Miracle a 12-2 lead. Tony Davis struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.  Eric Fryer hit a double in the bottom of the eighth, then advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Daniel Rohlfing. Fryer scored on a single from Calvin Anderson. Davis struck out another three batters to end the inning. Fort Myers brought Steve Blevins in the game to replace Davis, who had a tremendous performance, strking out eight and walking only two in three innings of work. Blevins set the Bradenton batters down in order to end the game with a final score of 12-3. Salcedo was credited the win and Brian Leach took the loss.

2010 FSL Baseball – Fort Myers Miracle & Bradenton Marauders

2010-fsl-baseball-miracle-marauders-5-24-23 It took Fort Myers five separate attempts to come up with its first win of the season on the road against the Bradenton Marauders, but the Miracle did so in impressive fashion Monday evening, downing the Bradenton franchise 12-3 in front of just under 500 fans at McKechnie Field.  The Marauders looked early like a team more than capable of keeping up with a initial strong showing on offense by the Miracle in innings two through four (four runs scored thanks to the hitting of Fort Myers’ second baseman Nicholas Romero, right fielder Evan Bigley, and a two-run homer in the fourth by center fielder Joe Benson), but sputtered after scoring two of its own runs in the first and third inning and yielding six scores to Fort Myers in the top of the seventh.  Bradenton’s bullpen, in particular, led by starter on the mound, Brian Leach, seemed unusually ineffective, with Leach (2-2) going five innings, but surrendering seven hits and four runs while striking out just three and walking two  on the evening.  Leach’s supporting staff in relievers Michael Felix and Tyler Cox fared little better, giving up a combined seven hits and eight runs over the span of three innings, while closer Tom Boleska too issued out two hits in the final inning of the game.  Both Benson and designated hitter Chris Parmalee proved the greatest benefactors from the Marauders’ poor pitching, with Benson finishing the night with not one, but two two-run home runs, while Parmalee added a grand slam in the top of the seventh.  That served to provide Fort Myers with its greatest margin of victory in a single game so far in 2010, while also marking the largest accumulation of scores so far this season.  Fort Myers’ starting pitcher Adrian Salcedo moves to 1-1 on the year in his second career-start for the Miracle, while the Miracle organization itself improves its record to 19-25 as a result of the win.  Bradenton will try to avenge its embarrassing loss Monday with the second of a three-game home stand against Fort Myers Tuesday evening.

2010 FSL Baseball – Fort Myers Miracle & Bradenton Marauders

2010-fsl-baseball-miracle-marauders-21 Those considering themselves fans of a defensive brand of baseball were treated to one heck of a pitcher’s duel Friday at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida, as Fort Myers Miracle ace Bruce Pugh matched up against the Marauders’ own marksmen on the mound, Brian Leach, in a game decided by a single run (final score: 1-0) in the final inning of play.  Pugh proved an absolute nightmare for Bradenton hitters throughout the contest, allowing just one hit and one walk through seven innings of work, and striking out 10 before being relieved in the eighth by Loek Van Mil.  Leach was less effective in his four innings on the hill for the Marauders, allowing three hits and striking out three before giving way to a trio of relievers in Casey Erickson, Diego Moreno and Noah Krol.  Still, with a combined single hit allowed through the game’s final five innings by Bradenton’s bullpen, the Marauders put themselves in prime position to take advantage of a hit batter in the bottom of the eighth which, soon followed up by a single placing runners on first and third, yielded the winning score on a fielder’s choice hit to third by second baseman, Greg Picart.  With the win – the Marauders’ second in as many days – Bradenton moves to 20-14 and remains entangled in a tightly-contested race for first place in the FSL South with the Palm Beach Cardinals.  Fort Myers, meanwhile, drops to 15-19 with the loss on the road, but seeks revenge against Bradenton Saturday night at home in Hammond Stadium with a single-game matchup slated for a 7:05 p.m. start.
