2010 Fort Myers Miracle vs Bradenton Marauders Game 1

ftmyrsbrton1_41 Having already squared off eight times, Fort Myers returned to McKechnie Field to face the familiar Bradenton Marauders. The Miracle sent 19 year old Adrian Salcedo (0-1) to the mound to oppose Bradenton’s Brian Leach (2-1). Bradenton struck first as Brock Holt scored a run in the first inning off of a Tony Sanchez sacrifice fly. This would be the only lead Bradenton would hold the entire game, and it did not last long. In the following inning Leach gave up back to back singles to Daniel Rohlfing and Jair Fernandez. Nicholas Romero drove in both runners with a single to take the lead, 2 to 1. In the third, Brian Dozier added another run for the Miracle off an Evan Bigley sacrifice. Bradenton tried to keep it close, adding another run to tie the game when Robbie Grossman’s single to right field brought Brock Holt home. Fort Myers answered right back in the fourth inning. After a walk by Nicholas Romero, Joe Benson hit a two run home run to give the Miracle a 4 to 2 lead. In the sixth inning, Michael Felix replaced Brian Leach for the Marauders. Joe Benson hit another two run home run, brining Fort Myers lead to 6- 2. In the bottom of the inning, the Miracle replaced Salcedo with left-hander, Tony Davis. The Miracle broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh. Evan Bigley led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Nathan Hanson. A wild pitch from Felix advanced the runners to second and third. With two outs, Nicholas Romero hit a ground rule double which scored Bigley and Hanson. The Marauders sent Tyler Cox to relieve Felix. Joe Benson collected his third hit of the inning, knocking a single past shortstop Brock Holt. Cox walked the next batter, Brian Dozier to load the bases. Chris Parmalee hit his first grand slam of the season to give the Miracle a 12-2 lead. Tony Davis struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.  Eric Fryer hit a double in the bottom of the eighth, then advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Daniel Rohlfing. Fryer scored on a single from Calvin Anderson. Davis struck out another three batters to end the inning. Fort Myers brought Steve Blevins in the game to replace Davis, who had a tremendous performance, strking out eight and walking only two in three innings of work. Blevins set the Bradenton batters down in order to end the game with a final score of 12-3. Salcedo was credited the win and Brian Leach took the loss.

2010 FSL Baseball – Fort Myers Miracle & Bradenton Marauders

2010-fsl-baseball-miracle-marauders-5-24-23 It took Fort Myers five separate attempts to come up with its first win of the season on the road against the Bradenton Marauders, but the Miracle did so in impressive fashion Monday evening, downing the Bradenton franchise 12-3 in front of just under 500 fans at McKechnie Field.  The Marauders looked early like a team more than capable of keeping up with a initial strong showing on offense by the Miracle in innings two through four (four runs scored thanks to the hitting of Fort Myers’ second baseman Nicholas Romero, right fielder Evan Bigley, and a two-run homer in the fourth by center fielder Joe Benson), but sputtered after scoring two of its own runs in the first and third inning and yielding six scores to Fort Myers in the top of the seventh.  Bradenton’s bullpen, in particular, led by starter on the mound, Brian Leach, seemed unusually ineffective, with Leach (2-2) going five innings, but surrendering seven hits and four runs while striking out just three and walking two  on the evening.  Leach’s supporting staff in relievers Michael Felix and Tyler Cox fared little better, giving up a combined seven hits and eight runs over the span of three innings, while closer Tom Boleska too issued out two hits in the final inning of the game.  Both Benson and designated hitter Chris Parmalee proved the greatest benefactors from the Marauders’ poor pitching, with Benson finishing the night with not one, but two two-run home runs, while Parmalee added a grand slam in the top of the seventh.  That served to provide Fort Myers with its greatest margin of victory in a single game so far in 2010, while also marking the largest accumulation of scores so far this season.  Fort Myers’ starting pitcher Adrian Salcedo moves to 1-1 on the year in his second career-start for the Miracle, while the Miracle organization itself improves its record to 19-25 as a result of the win.  Bradenton will try to avenge its embarrassing loss Monday with the second of a three-game home stand against Fort Myers Tuesday evening.

2010 Minnesota Twins Minor League Camp

twinsminor_32 The Minnesota Twins opened their minor league camp this morning at Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida for the first official spring practice. Minor league players from the Rochester, New Britain, Fort Myers, and Beloit farm teams worked out with the minor league coaches and Twins Hall of Famer’s Rod Carew and Paul Molitor. The morning practice consisted mostly of pitching drills and bull pen sessions to shake off the rust from the off season. After a lengthy team meeting, the pitchers hit the showers but position players took the field once again for fielding and conditioning drills.

Even though many of their top prospects are still attending Minnesota’s big league camp, a bevy of talent was on display at the practice fields Saturday morning. Newly drafted pitching prospects Matt Bashore, Kyle Gibson and Ben Tootle all threw strong bullpen sessions. Returning stars David Bromberg and Carlos Gutierrez had solid outings as well, reminding coaches while they will soon be suiting up for the show. The Twins will continue practices at Lee County Sports Complex through Tuesday. The first spring training game will be held Wednesday, March 17th against the Boston Red Sox organization. Minor league spring training camp breaks April 6th and players will report immediately after to their respective minor league teams.
